WSIAT Announces a Truth and Reconciliation Initiative

As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I am pleased to announce the launch of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal's (WSIAT) multi-year Truth and Reconciliation initiative.

This initiative reflects WSIAT's ongoing commitment to learning, relationship-building, and improving access to justice for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples who participate in the Tribunal's appeal process. It is guided by the understanding that reconciliation is an ongoing journey and that meaningful change requires listening, collaboration, and action.

Over the coming months and years, we will work alongside Indigenous communities, organizations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other advisors to better understand barriers Indigenous peoples may experience when accessing Tribunal services. What we learn will help guide improvements to how we communicate, engage with, and serve Indigenous parties.

A key focus of this initiative is the exploration and development of a dedicated appeal process for Indigenous parties who choose to participate. Our goal is to help reduce barriers and support a hearing experience that is culturally respectful, responsive, and safe, while maintaining the Tribunal's commitment to fairness and independence.

The initiative also builds on work already underway at WSIAT, including Indigenous cultural competency training, outreach and relationship-building efforts, and the creation of an Indigenous Community Advisory Council to help inform future improvements. As this work progresses, we look forward to sharing updates, while continuing to learn from the voices and experiences of Indigenous peoples across Ontario.

WSIAT recognizes that reconciliation is not a destination. It is a long-term commitment to reflection, learning, relationship-building, and action.

We look forward to working together to support meaningful and lasting change.
